Music Marketing ReviewFriendster

Site Review:

Friendster is another social networking site similar to Bebo. The sign-up process is simple, but you need to switch your profile to a "fan profile" if you want to be listed as a band. Each "fan profile" needs to be approved by Friendster first. There is no indication on the site as to what is required for approval. They simply offer a blank field on the form for you to provide information and/or links to your official site. So that's what I did. I did receive an email soon after that stated I could expect an answer in 2-3 business days, and that my chances of being "approved" would be increased if I added detailed bio and written content, audio and video to me existing user profile. Honestly, I don't see where you can add audio, and most of the user profile fields are personal, not band or business related in anyway. Once again, my band name was already taken so I appended the word "music" to my profile URL.

I'll have to follow-up later when and if my "fan profile" has been approved. However, I must say that I was disappointed when I decided to check out an example band profile for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and the comments section was chock full of very graphic animated porn. Let's just say that I'm not going to allow my children onto this site anytime soon. As much as I like to complain about the lack of moderation at Myspace, this site seems to take the "hands off" approach to a whole new level. I couldn't even find a page on the site that explains who to contact about inappropriate content.

Update: I recently received an email from Friendster indicating that my request to convert my user profile into a band profile was denied. They stated that I might have a better chance of being approved if I added additional content, although I had already populated the fields they had requested (primary photo, information about me or my organization). Perhaps if I posted pornographic animated close-up images of people having sex in my comments area, they would have approved my request. After all, that's what shows up on the other Friendster band pages...
